When temperatures rise, your air conditioner is the only thing that stands between you and the sweltering heat. Your AC, just like other household appliances, needs periodic maintenance. It is highly advisable to get your air conditioner thoroughly inspected and maintained by an HVAC expert once a year (preferably before summer).
If you are one of the several homeowners who know the importance of AC maintenance, but cannot figure out how to start, you have come to the right place! Here are some AC maintenance guidelines.
Periodically Inspect and Replace Filters
AC filters get clogged over time. Clogged filters obstruct the normal airflow, and are unable to trap contaminants in the outside air. Unclean filters carry dirt directly to the evaporator coil and can soil the cooling coils. To steer clear of these issues, clean or replace your filters every month.
Clean Evaporator Coils
Even if you periodically maintain your filters, some dirt will get deposited on the evaporator coils. Dust build-up can negatively impact the heat-absorbing capacity of evaporator coils. To prevent this from happening, thoroughly clean your coils once a year.
Check For and Remove Clogs in the Rear Drain
When the drain at the rear end gets obstructed, the water inside the AC is unable to find an outlet. When this happens, the water starts dripping inside the room from any opening it can find. Before you understand what is happening, humidity levels inside the room drastically increase.
To maintain your AC drain, open up the drain line and pour two cups of warm water and vinegar solution through the line. Perform the activity at least once a year.
Maintain Your Condenser
Do not allow vegetation around your condenser to get dense. Cut down any weed, grass, shrubs, or vines as they can obstruct airflow. Clean fins and condenser with commercial coil cleaner. Repair or replace bent and damaged fins. Make sure the pad on which your unit’s condenser rests is level.
